# How to Price Irrigation & Sprinkler Install Jobs
Irrigation contractors lose money in one of two ways: they under-count zones, or they under-count trenching. Both come from the same root cause: quoting a lawn by eyeballing it instead of running the water-flow math. A yard that "looks like a 4-zone job" turns into 6 zones once you calculate GPM per head, the trencher hits clay and rock, and the fixed-bid quote you gave the homeowner now barely covers materials. Pricing irrigation well means designing the system on paper first, then pricing off the design, not the vibe.

Price Off Zones, Because Water Physics Decides the Zone Count
The single most important number in an irrigation quote is the number of zones, and you do not get to choose it, the water supply does. Each zone can only deliver as much water as the supply provides, measured in gallons per minute (GPM) at a given pressure (PSI).
Run the math before you quote:
1. Measure available flow. Do a bucket test at the outdoor spigot: time how long to fill a 5-gallon bucket. 30 seconds means 10 GPM. Also read static PSI with a gauge; most residential is 40 to 65 PSI. 2. Deduct for friction and safety. You design to about 75 percent of measured GPM to leave headroom, so 10 GPM measured means you design zones around 7.5 usable GPM. 3. Sum head demand. Each spray head uses 1.5 to 4 GPM; each rotor uses 0.75 to 6 GPM depending on nozzle. Add up the heads that must run together, and when they exceed your usable GPM, that is a new zone.
A typical quarter-acre lot with average city pressure lands at 4 to 8 zones. Under-count zones and the system runs dry heads, low pressure, and dry patches, which becomes a callback and a reputation problem. This is why you design first: the zone count drives valves, wire, controller stations, and labor hours, which drive the price.

Build the Install Estimate From Real Line Items
A defensible install quote adds up these buckets:
Materials per zone. A zone needs a valve ($15 to $40), the heads (spray heads $3 to $8 each, rotors $8 to $25 each), pipe or poly tubing, fittings, and wire back to the controller. A residential zone typically runs $80 to $180 in materials depending on head count and pipe run.
Backflow preventer. Code-required in most jurisdictions to protect the potable supply. A device plus install is $150 to $400, and many areas require a licensed test after install ($75 to $150).
Controller. A basic timer is $40 to $80; a smart Wi-Fi controller is $150 to $300. Price to the station count your zones require.
Trenching and labor. This is the line that makes or breaks the job. Trenching runs $1 to $3 per linear foot in easy soil and far more in clay, rock, or with hardscape to cut. A crew installs roughly one to two zones per labor-day. Price labor at your loaded crew rate (commonly $60 to $110 per crew-hour all-in).
Permits and inspection. Some municipalities require a permit and backflow inspection. Build the fee and the trip into the quote.
A finished residential install commonly prices at $500 to $1,000 per zone all-in, so a 6-zone system lands around $3,000 to $6,000. Commercial and difficult sites go higher.
Price Maintenance and Seasonal Service as Recurring Revenue
Installs are lumpy; maintenance is the smooth, high-margin income that carries you through slow months. Price these as standard packaged services:
- Spring startup / activation: charge the water on, check every head, adjust spray, program the controller. Typically $75 to $150 for a residential system, more for larger zone counts.
- Winterization / blowout: compressed-air purge to prevent freeze damage. $75 to $175, and it is fast, high-margin work you can route densely in fall.
- Mid-season tune-up / repair: head replacement, leak repair, controller reprogramming, billed at a service-call fee ($75 to $125) plus parts and time.
- Seasonal maintenance contract: bundle startup, one tune-up, and winterization for an annual price. Contracts lock in recurring revenue and give you a route you can plan.
The reason to sell contracts is route density. Ten winterizations on the same street beat ten scattered across the county. Common Irrigation Pricing Mistakes

Underpricing trenching. Soil is the wildcard. Walk the site, probe for rock and clay, and note hardscape you must bore under or cut through. A fixed bid that assumes soft loam and hits limestone is a money-losing job.
Ignoring the backflow requirement. Leaving it out of the quote means eating a $250 to $500 cost or a change order that annoys the customer. Know your local code and always include it.
Not charging for design time. Larger and commercial jobs need real hydraulic design and a valve/wire plan. That is billable engineering, not a free favor.
No winterization upsell. In freeze climates, a system that is not blown out cracks pipes and valves. Every install customer should leave with a winterization booked; it protects them and it is easy fall revenue for you.
A Worked Example
A homeowner wants their quarter-acre yard irrigated. Bucket test shows 9 GPM, static pressure 55 PSI. Designing to 75 percent usable (about 6.7 GPM), the head layout requires 6 zones. Materials run about $130 per zone ($780), backflow preventer and test $350, smart controller $220, and about 1,400 linear feet of trenching in moderate soil at $1.75/ft ($2,450 including labor and pipe install). Add permit and backflow test $200 and design time $150.
Total cost is roughly $4,150. Price at a healthy margin and you quote around $5,400 to $5,800, in line with the $900-per-zone benchmark. Then you book the winterization for October at $125, and next spring's activation at $110, turning a one-time install into a customer who pays you every season.
